Urban Key : Unlock Downtown Indy

Moodboard
I found inspiration through Airbnb and Compass.
When studying the photos, I looked for camera angles, tried to decifer what kind of lens was used,
what time of day the shots were taken, and subject matter in general.
I challenged myself to find what makes each neighborhood in Indianapolis different.

The Name
Throughout my research process I had been calling this design
endeavor the Indianapolis Neighborhood Project. It was equally straightforward as it was boring.
Right then I knew there was much to be desired through this name.
Logo Process
How could I incorporate a key into the logo?
Would I use a key that represents Indy’s modhomes or a key that was
most likely used to open the doors of the many historic homes?
Would I use a key at all?
Style Guide
The type treatment needed to portray the essence of the
Indianapolis downtown neighborhoods, be clean, modern, and timeless.
The colors were chosen to best capture both the urban and historic sides
of living in downtown Indianapolis. The city flag consists of a deep blue and dark rich red.
These colors are lighter to portray a more cultured look.
Photography
While the idea for this site would be to have local photographers shoot their
neighborhoods, I shot the photography for this project. I used a Canon 5D Mark III.
The Survey
Urban Key would speak for all the neighborhoods of Downtown Indianapolis.
I needed more information about each neighborhood as soon as possible.
Hoping to get over 100 responses, I was pleased with the 63 colorfully charming
residents of downtown Indianapolis who took my survey.
Persona Sketches
Before I began designing urbankeyindy.com, I drew a few persona sketches.
Persona sketches helped me to focus on the user so that, when designing the website,
I could incorporate all of their needs.
